July 14th

Well it's over and I am writing this from my office in a slightly dazed state. Did we really do it? I must admit in the last two days it was tempting to do a Donald Crowhurst but rest assured dear blogger I huffed and puffed on your behalf all the way there. I was talking to myself though on the last day trying to convince myself that it was nearly over and I would feel warm again once I got out of the cycling gear and put on some dry clothes. The Who's record "Won't be fooled again" springs to mind!!!

We covered 940 miles in 11 days and 3 hours which averages out at 82 miles per day. Not too bad for a senior citizen and a somewhat overweight 58 year old [59 tomorrow] With your help we raised well over one thousand pounds for each of our charities. A very big thank you from both of us.

Some facts and pointers if you ever feel the urge to do this!

  • See your doctor first to get checked out
  • See a shrink next to check your sanity
  • Choose a good bike. I bought my Marin, Lucas Valley, on E bay for £275. The chain came off three times and a spoke went but no punctures. Alan was riding a Triumph touring bike. If you want to ride all the way make sure you have a good range of low gears.
  • Get the right kit to wear. I made a big mistake in underestimating the weather in Scotland. It was like winter and I was wearing shorts!
  • You need to get saddle ready. Spend some hours riding to get used to it. Because of time I was only doing 12 miles a day with the odd 20 miles before the start. There was a nice big hill in that though.
  • We would never have had so much fun without Dave the trolley and his caravan in support. Getting on the road and doing 20 miles before breakfast at nine is the way to go so if you can convince someone to support you with a caravan it will make it all so much easier.
  • Think of 10 miles as one hour unless you are really going for it and then you up the anti accordingly
  • Ride on busy roads with lots of traffic before the start. You can't avoid doing this on the ride and if you are of a nervous disposition don't do the ride.
  • Have a sense of humor because you will need to use it a lot.
  • Of course you need a total plan but once that's in place think one day at a time only.
  • Having a beer in the evening is fine but limit it to two. Sounds obvious I know but the temptation is great especially if you are with good company.
  • Don't be frightened / embarrassed call it what you will to walk. I suppose I must have walked approx. one and a half miles in total.
  • The only thing you can't plan well in advance is the weather. You will get wet and it will be windy at some point and again make sure you practice in the rain.
The route:
We drove down to Lands End with the bikes on the back of the car and returned with Dave in his vehicle.

Day 1: Lands End to St Agnes
Day 2: St Agnes to Okhampton
Day 3: Okhampton to Street
Day 4: Street to South Cerny [Alan's House]
Day 5: South Cerny to Bridgenorth
Day 6: Bridgenorth to Parbold near Wigan
Day 7: Wigan to Shap
Day 8: Shap to Abington
Day 9 Abington to Tarbert on Loch Lomond
Day 10: Tarbert to Spean Bridge
Day 11: Spean Bridge to Dornock
Day 12: Dornock to John O'Groats

I am going to put a video together and if you want one just e mail me.

A hugh thank you to Claire, Molly and Sheila for believing in us. Thanks to everyone that supported and kindly donated and thanks to the many kind people that wished us well throughout the journey.

Bye
John, Alan, Dave the trolley, Sooty, Geo Bear and JB's Willy!

PS Did I lose any weight?

Day 11 cont
Forgot to give marks out of 10. 2 from me. 7 from Alan because of the mileage. Dave the trolley gives a 10 because of our efforts. Blowing old boots at the moment and forecast is heavy rain and strong winds. Oh dear, no one said this would be easy. Nite again and I'm going to be first into bed tonight
Day 11
A lovely sunny day with one major problem. THE WIND. Just like going sailing. Right on the nose.Just where you want to go to. A total of 98 miles today which took 14hrs with stops. We came along the side of Loch Ness and then cut the corner missing Inverness and joined up with the A9 which is our route all the way to the finishing post84 miles away.We are now on track to finish tomorrow, one day earlier than planned if the wind treats us a lot kinder than today. I also lost my record of not walking up any hills today. A 15 per cent hill got the better of me and I had to walk a quarter of a mile. Alan made it with a couple of stops. Well done me old handsome. He kindly said that his gearing was a lower ratio than my bike.Thank you to the lady at the garage today who kindly donated some money to Help For Heroes and thanks again to everyone else that has donated to the two charites that we are riding for. I saw the headlines today about the latest fatalities. Just awful.
Thanks for all your comments and Liz, my Willy is safely locked up in the van to keep him out of trouble.
Nite blog followers and thanks for reading

Day 10
This could be a short blog as I am standing in a pub car park trying to get a signal!. What a cracking day. 9 out of 10. Blue skies and the greatest of views to Fort William. Just over 70 miles covered and we are over nighting in a pub car park at Spean Bridge on the A82. Makeing our way towards Inverness alondsde Loch Ness tomorrow so if there are no more sightings of us the monster has got us. We understand that we had a request from Johnny Walker this morning. Can anyone confirm please? Thanks to whoever requested it. Its now 2030 and believe it or not we are off to bed as we were on the road this morning at 6. We are both feeling tired now but not far to the finish. I have my video camera with me and I think the title for the next'Slightly Fat Man' production will be ''I only went out for a paper''
Goodnight from Jb Alan Dave Sooty and Geo

Day 9
21.45 and Dave is snoring!!
Day 9
At last we are past Glasgow. Total mileage for today was 82.left late this morning, 07.30. Could have been something to do with the pint John W bought us last night. Lovely to see you all. John's daughter, Dawn, has 5 huskies and today as we went through Larkhall we were greeted by 2 of them. Tempted to hook them up to the bike. Apparently they would have loved it. Used the sat nav on the bike for the first time today to get through Glasgow. Worked a treat and then followed a cycle route out of town to Loch Lomond. Not a good idea on reflection.Came up the A82 past the Scottish Golf Open. Road very quite when we went past but judging by the cars in the car park it didn't stay that way. Last part of journey today was along the cycle path following the Loch. Wonderful and if you have never done it you should.Dave the trolley found a great site by the loch. Only problem is the squadrons of mossies looking for fresh meat. Must also say thank you to Corrie and her daughter,Caitlin, who drove out of Glasgow this evening to say hello. Lovely to see you both. Its now 21.35 and Dave the trolley has been in bed for 20mins already! Sheila his wife will never believe it. Fort William tomorrow. 63 miles but I have a feeling it will be an up hill and down dale sort of ride.

Marks out of 10 for today. 7. Coming through Glasgow let the scoreing down.

Wednesday 8 July 2009

Day 8
Up and on the road at 0530 this morning. Finished at 1745 a little weary to say the least. 89 miles covered via Carlisle, Gretna Green and a lot of the B7076 ending up in Abington. I think Shap took a lot out of us as we had a nearly two hour lunch stop with a nice catch up sleep. We also had a headwind that made life very tiresome. We hope to overnight tomorrow in Tarbert. This is where our boat Siona Of Fyne was built so I am really looking forward to seeing that. A lot colder today but we kept dry which was a plus.Total mileage is 596. We met three lads that left Lands End last Sunday and aim to arrive at John OGroats this Friday. One of them has already done this before and in resonse to me saying he needed to get a life he said he had one but it was s***
Good luck guys.

Day 7
Having a problem logging in fellow bloggers. 77 miles in all including a real lung burster up Shap. Route today was up the A6 through Preston, Lancaster and then Kendal and Shap where we are overnighting. Had a little off route for 4 miles along the Lancaster Canal. Seemed a good idea at the time but we lost an hour overalland total time in the saddle today 12 hrs. Oh my sore bum!Had to stop a few times up Shap but the record of not walking up any hills still stands. Irish stew followed by apple pie and custard and a couple of beers has made us all feel better..Wonderful to have Dave the trolley as support with the caravan. I could have kissed him at the top of Shap as he greeted us woth a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit.
Some thoughts from me; what doughnut thinks of putting bike lanes in towns and cities and when you are using them you suddenly come across Bike lane Ends. Where on earth are you supposed to go I wonder?
Huffing and puffing up Shap and coming across slow down signs and max speed 40 mph. I wish. .
Goodnight camp followers. We appericate your support and would welcome more comments.

Bit tired tonight so goodnight you avid camp followers. Will try and pen something a bit more interesting tomorrow.
PS This time next week we will have arrived

Day 6
Lunchtime and 63 miles under our belts. Dodging the showers today and to the south of us it looks like night time. We took shelter from the rain in a post office at Winsford. Thanks to Ita for the wine gums, they were lovely. Our first night sleeping.in the caravan. We all had our heads down by 10pm.Its the earliest Dave the trolley has been to bed for years he states.A greats night sleep was had by all. Up and on the road by 0615. For those that may be inspired to have a crack at this in the future getting on the road early is the way to.go.
Lunch over and 30 miles to go before meeting up with an old friend. We are on our way Tex

Sunday 5 July 2009

Day 5 cont
Safe and sound at 1700 and a total of 74 miles. 9 out of
10 for today. The rain in the last hour spoilt it..I change gear with my right hand. Going up a gear is easy enough, ijust use my first finger. Going down is the problem. I push a lever with my thumb. Am action I am not used to and the rthumb is starting to protest. As I said yesterday life is not a bowel of cherries. Must get the I pod out and play comfortably numb by Pink Floyd.Nite nite
JB
Day 5
Sitting sheltering from the rain with 70 miles uner the belt and about 4 miles to meet up with Dave the trolley at the caravan site. What a difference not having to carry so much stuff on the bikes. Its piled high with Dave in the van. A really good ride today with only one really good lung buster in the last 10 miles. Alan has kindly warned me that day 6 will be hard. Um what can I say! Lunch by the side of the road in a lounge chair and even had to sit in the shade as it was to hot. Bye for now you avid camp followers. Regards to Jane and Ken who hopefully have joined the growing army of followers.
Regards also to the Bacton Boys

Day 4
I have come to the conclusion that life is NOT a bowel of cherries. Its a sore bottom, aching legs, aching shoulders, aching hands, and an obession with time and the speedo on the bike! One hour is 10 miles.
We were up at 5.30 this morning and on the road at 6.30 to Alan's house in South Cerney for an overnight stop. Is this a good idea I wonder? We arrived 70 miles later at 13.45 so it has felt like a holiday this afternoon. I did have a relapse this morning but after a quick 5 min power nap beside the road and a drink of coke it was back on the bike. Alan's speedo had stopped working so off to the bike shop this afternoon with me driving the car. What a wonderful invention. I had a good soak and an hours sleep while Alan fitted the new speedo and tried to sort his gears out. Claire has driven down today, thanks for putting up with and supporting my madcap ideas Claire, and we are being joined for dinner tonight by Sheila and Dave. Dave joins us tomorrow in a support role. Thanks Dave and we look forward to some of your Jethro jokes along the way. Not a bad ride today as only a couple of lung busters and then mainly flat. Thanks for the call this morning Matthew and enjoy your hammock in the sun. Good luck to the young man getting married today who we met at breakfast this morning. I did offer him my bike to escape but he rufused. Hello to the lady in the Burger King who said she would log on to follow our progress and thanks Molly for looking after us so well tonight.
That's it for now everyone. Off to Bridgenorth tomorrow, leaving at 8. Marks out of 10 for today. 8
Thanks for your comments and support, it means a lot to us.

PS JB's Willy is also joing us from tomorrow much to the digust of Claire!

Friday 3 July 2009

Day 3
I have come to the conclusion that this bike ride / event call it what you will is just like life. Its better not knowing what is around the corner, you just get on with it.
Thanks to lesley and Mark for last nigt and sorry again for leaving a messy towel. A hugh thank you to Tim at the bike shop for fixing my bike which allowed us to be on the road at 0945. A really hugh thank you to the two ladies in the sandwich shop in Crediton who suggested a less hilly route although it was 5 miles longer. You were spot on and we actually enjoyed it. Total distance today was 82 miles and we are over nighting in Street in a Yourh Hostel. Feel that we are here under false pretencies. In a 7 man room and had to make our own beds. Sharing with one other person besides Alan so perhaps when the lights go out I spy will be a bit more interesting. Weather good today and not to hot and we have left the hills behind for a short while at least. Bob and Liz caught us up on their Norton motorbikes, thanks for stopping and have a good rally this weekend. Marks out of 10 for today - 7. I'm putting a video together for the trip. Any suggestions for the music?

Day 2
12 hours in the saddle and a distance of 85 miles covered. Was it a good call to avoid the A30? Um, to late now of course but we both felt like mountain goats on arrival in Okehampton. Rained cats and dogs in the morning and a steady flow the rest of the day. Not pleasant but it kept us cool. We have managed to cycle every inch so far and hopefully that will be the case for the rest of the trip. A slight problem with the last 200 yds, One of JB's back spokes went bang so we must get that fixed first thing. We won't think about what might have been if it was 20 miles out from the night stop.Sooty will have to go on a diet. Hopefully it will not delay us to long as its another up hill and down dale day ahead of us. Target is Street tonight. Our thanks to Ann, Liz and Bob who put us up for the first night. Tony H who gave us a cheer at several points along the way. The St Kew Harvest Farm shop who kindly said the drinks and scones were on the house. Hello to Carla and her mummy Antonina.
Well avid bloggers, groupies, well wishers and those with a morbid interest in two old grown men cyclying badly to Scotland catch up soon

Day 2
6am and I am not going to need my sunglasses this morning. Its raining and this bed is very comfortable, tempting to just roll over and go back to sleep..Todays target is Oakhamton, about 70 odd miles Alan tells me. Just over an hour in a car and I expect about 7 hours for us. Take my hat off to Ian Botham and all the others that have walked the course. At least we get to free wheel down the hills. Getting up them is a different story. Time to get up and have breakfast. We want to be on the for 8am. Not going to take the A30, not at all a pleasent experince. Breakfast calls
JB
Day One
First day over and we are safe and well in St Anges Cornwall. After much posing with Sooty and Geo the bear at the famous signpost to New York and John O'Groats we left at 1445 with the temp at 27C. A little hot but todays mileage was only 35 miles. I had a close escape with a block of wood and if I had hit that it would have been over I think for me. We didn't enjoy the traffic on the A30 either.Traffic to close and to fast and of course the white van man shouting. I would like to think it was words of support but I don't think so. Well avid bloggers dinner becokns. Marks out of 10 for today : 8 out of 10. Keep reading and I understand that there might be some children now following Geo the bear. I think you should know that Geo spent today on Alan's bike on his back sunbathing. Not at all supportive and I will have words with him. Could be an early start because of the heat. Au revoir avid boggers
JB, Sooty, Alan and Geo
D day: on our way down there and Molly driving. Temp 25C and we are covered in factor50 with sudocrem on our little petit bottoms.I must stress that Alan put his own on. This may change as the week goes on and we start to bond. Nothing at all to do with 007.
Bye for now you avid bloggers
